Property for sale in Cape Town
South Africa’s oldest and second largest city, Cape Town is considered to be the country’s star attraction when it comes to international tourism and world-class properties. Its setting, nestled under Table Mountain on a peninsula dotted with forests and vineyards, and surrounded by two different oceans, makes it a truly spectacular place to live.
Situated in the south west corner of the country, Cape Town enjoys a largely Mediterranean climate, which makes it perfect for viticulture. It is no surprise then, that South Africa’s wine-making region is located in this part of the Western Cape.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Khoikhoi people, Cape Town became a trading post for first the Dutch and then British settlers from as early as the 1600’s. This maritime heritage continues today, with Cape Town’s harbour still a bustling port servicing the Atlantic corridor. It is also home to the South African Navy and many major shipbuilding companies.
Besides a healthy tourism and property industry, Cape Town is also considered to be a haven for models, filmmakers and advertising executives and all of these industries contribute significantly to the local economy. This glamourous cache, along with the city’s extraordinary natural beauty is what continues to attract foreigner visitors and property investors from all over the world. It also means that property prices in Cape Town remain higher than elsewhere in the country.
Cape Town is also the legislative capital of South Africa. The public sector, together with the industries that service it, are all significant sources of revenue and employment. The IT industry is also enjoying major growth in the region, all of which means plenty of jobs for those with the right skills.
Infrastructure is good, with an international airport, excellent road system as well as an efficient local and national rail service. Many of the schools in the area, which consist of both religious and secular government-run and private schools, are considered to be some of the best in the country.
As you’d expect from a seaside city, Cape Town has plenty to offer leisure-wise, from sun-worshipping on one of its many beaches to outdoor pursuits such as hiking up. Day trips to Robben Island and the wine region are also popular, as are visits to Cape Point nature reserve and the many craft markets dotted around the peninsula. Sport is another popular past-time and Cape Town is not short of both national and international rugby, cricket and football events for enthusiasts.
Cape Town real estate varies enormously in terms of style and price, but thanks to continued international interest, prices remain buoyant. Thanks its geographical position, many Cape Town properties enjoy outstanding views of either mountain or sea, and there is a wide range of stock to suit every budget and lifestyle, from seaside flats, to townhouse developments and single-storey family homes in the leafy southern suburbs, right through to the mansions of Clifton, Constantia and Bishops Court.
In recent years, a lot of development has taken place around Sea Point as a result of the ripple effect from the success of the regeneration of the Waterfront. Many new homes and housing estates have also sprung up in Cape Town’s outlying areas to the south and west, including Hout Bay and Noordhoek, where the scenery is unspoilt and people can get away from the hustle and bustle of the City Bowl.
